Existing law establishes the California State University, under the administration of the Trustees of the California State University.

Existing law establishes within the Government Operations Agency the Department of Technology. Existing law requires the Department of Technology to conduct, in coordination with other interagency bodies as it deems appropriate, a comprehensive inventory of all high-risk automated decision systems that have been proposed for use, development, or procurement by, or are being used, developed, or procured by, any state agency, including the California State University. For purposes of these provisions, existing law defines various terms, including “automated decision system” and “artificial intelligence.” Existing law requires the department to submit an annual report of the comprehensive inventory to the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection and the Senate Committee on Governmental Organization, until January 1, 2029.

This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation to protect California State University employees from the encroachment of artificial intelligence.
