				<html:p>WHEREAS, Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, non-melanoma skin cancers, are also very common forms of cancer in the United States; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, Early detection and treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is important as it can be cured; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) is the most important preventable cause of melanoma. Other possible causes include genetic factors and immune deficiencies. Malignant melanoma has also been linked to past sunburns and sun and tanning device exposure at younger ages; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, Melanoma can affect men, women, and children; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, According to Skin Cancer Foundation statistics, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by 70 years of age; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, Over five million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year, and more people are diagnosed in the United States each year than all other cancers combined; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, It is estimated that in the United States, 9,500 people each day are diagnosed with a malignant melanoma; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. In 2024, it is estimated that more than 200,340 melanomas will be diagnosed and about 8,290 people will die of melanoma; and</html:p>

				<html:p>WHEREAS, The California Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery has an outstanding record of service and leadership in advancing the cause of prevention, detection, and treatment of skin cancers and diseases of the skin, and in its service to the capitol community and the people of the State of California, and is encouraged to continue its endeavors to expand these screening and detection efforts throughout the state; now, therefore, be it</html:p>
