The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.</html:p>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, David Stan Piquette was born on January 1, 1972, to William “Bill” Piquette and Lan Thi Piquette; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>

                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Piquette was raised in Irvine, California with his brother Richard White Piquette and his sister Lisa Maria Piquette; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>

                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Piquette attended Irvine High School, where he played football and wrestled, and he met his future wife Shawna; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>

                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Piquette joined the United States Marine Corps where he served in a Security Forces Detail and was deployed on the USS Roosevelt for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, After his service, Piquette joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, where he worked at the Inmate Reception Center as a Custody Deputy; and</html:p>

                </ns0:Whereas>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette then worked patrol at Century Station and served there as a Patrol Field Training Officer; and</html:p>

                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette then went on to be a Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Training Bureau; and</html:p>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette was an avid runner and he competed in the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay nearly every year he was employed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; and</html:p>

                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_AF9EB4D3-F279-4BF2-BCC8-219F65F46D51">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette always showed elite discipline and dedication in everything he did, from volunteering his time, to assisting with training, to staying late to work overtime, and to spending time with his family and loved ones; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette was always a tremendous worker; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>

                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette’s character and work ethic earned him the respect of his peers; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>

                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette earned numerous Public Commendations, Unit Commander Commendations, and awards for his Commendable Restraint and devotion to service, during his time on the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_36EDCAEA-A2DE-4BFE-AA15-F9641365744B">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, In addition to his committed service, Deputy Piquette was a committed husband to his high school sweetheart, Shawna, and a committed father to his two children, twins Justin David Piquette and Jordan Ashley Piquette; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_9B5BF4CD-8319-4BAD-8947-A5ACBB2BF661">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, On Friday, July 7, 2006, Deputy Piquette was traveling to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s academy when he was killed in an automobile crash on State Route 91; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_36030B74-E057-47CB-96C3-15CB38FD3CD7">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, A stove had fallen from another vehicle on the highway and landed in a lane of travel; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_69B0C88D-ACFD-4150-AC26-B731D164526C">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Several vehicles took evasive action to avoid striking the stove, including Deputy Piquette and a tractor-trailer; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_A0676F6D-FBD3-455B-AD6A-29A5E325DB7A">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, One of the trailers overturned and landed on top of Deputy Piquette’s unmarked vehicle, causing fatal injuries; and</html:p>
                        </ns0:Content>
                </ns0:Whereas>
                <ns0:Whereas id="id_8F3D991B-DAE6-411A-8FB7-4DB43A8289F4">
                        <ns0:Content>
                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette was 34 years of age and had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 10 years; and</html:p>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette is survived by his wife and two children; and</html:p>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Deputy Piquette was a hero in all the roles of his life, including soldier, deputy, husband, father, and friend; and</html:p>

                                <html:p>WHEREAS, Naming a portion of the highway where that fateful event occurred is a fitting tribute to Deputy Piquette’s service and sacrifice to the nation and his community; now, therefore, be it</html:p>

                                        <html:i>Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring,</html:i>
                                         That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Route 91 from the Glassell Street overpass, at postmile 7.357, to the N. Tustin Avenue overpass, at postmile 8.409, in the County of Orange, as the Deputy David Piquette Memorial Highway; and be it further
