<html:p>This bill would establish the California yellow jacket (Vespula sulphurea) as the official state wasp.</html:p>

<html:p>The Legislature hereby finds and declares all of the following:</html:p>

(a)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
The California yellow jacket, or Vespula sulphurea, is an endemic California species meaning it can be found in no other regions in the world. This wasp species is mostly found in California’s Upper Sonora fauna, as well as nearby states such as southern Oregon, western Nevada, southern Arizona and northern Baja California.

The California yellow jacket is not a common species. Known for its unique greenish-yellow “racing stripes,” it can be identified by the longitudinal bands across its thorax.

Like most yellow jacket species, their
nests are built in underground nests and follow the typical hive system with a queen, drone, and workers that protect the colony.

Their diet consists of protein and sugars from other insects such as spiders, flies, caterpillars and human food scraps, as well as nectar, ripe fruit and human drinks like soda. Yellow jackets are opportunistic feeders and can be found near trash cans, gardens, and at picnics.

Colton High School in San Bernardino, which opened in 1895, has had the yellow jacket as the school mascot since the 1950s named Yogi. Several other schools across the state such as Berkeley High School and Franklin High School in Stockton also have the yellow jacket as the school mascot.
