The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd Coleman and his son, Michael Coleman, lived in the City of Manteca; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Michael Coleman attended schools in the City of Manteca; and </html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd Coleman was sworn in as a member of the sheriff’s auxiliary in 1954; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Michael Coleman joined the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office as a cadet and he was promoted one year later to a deputy, with his father pinning his gold star on Michael’s chest; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd Coleman served as the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office’s Rangemaster, teaching young deputies the techniques necessary to properly use a firearm; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Michael worked in the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office’s Custody Division and Patrol Division, and he worked as an undercover detective in the Metropolitan Narcotics Task Force; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, On March 25, 1982, Floyd Coleman was working at the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office’s range, and the Metropolitan Narcotics Task Force was assigned to serve a search warrant for drugs in the City of Stockton; and</html:p>

</ns0:Whereas>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Detective Michael Coleman responded and an exchange of gunfire occurred during the service of the search warrant, resulting in Detective Michael Coleman being shot; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Detective Michael Coleman was transported to Dameron Hospital in the City of Stockton; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, A patrol unit responded to the range to transport Floyd Coleman to the hospital, and as they approached the hospital, Floyd slumped forward; and</html:p>

<ns0:Content>
<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd had suffered a heart attack, and he was rushed into an examination room inside the hospital, but it was too late; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd and Michael Coleman were pronounced dead, and were later laid to rest side by side; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd and Michael Coleman are both buried in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in the City of Escalon; and</html:p>

<html:p>WHEREAS, Floyd and Michael Coleman will be remembered for their hard work and dedication to professionalism in law enforcement, and they will be profoundly missed by all; now, therefore, be it</html:p>

That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Route 120 from S Van Allen Road, at postmile 13.83, to N Ripon Road, at postmile 9.82, in the County of San Joaquin as the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Deputies Floyd and Michael Coleman Memorial Highway; and be it further
