<html:p>The director shall have the following powers and it shall be the director’s duty to:</html:p>
<html:p>
(a)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Recommend and propose the enactment of legislation that is necessary to protect and promote the interests of consumers.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(b)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Represent the consumer’s interests before federal and state legislative hearings and executive commissions.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(c)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Assist, advise, and cooperate with federal, state, and local agencies and officials to protect and promote the interests of consumers.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(d)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Study, investigate, research, and analyze matters affecting the interests of consumers.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(e)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Hold public hearings, subpoena witnesses, take testimony, compel the production of books, papers, documents, and other evidence, and call upon other state agencies for information.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(f)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Propose and assist in the creation and development of consumer education programs.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(g)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Promote ethical standards of conduct for business and consumers
and undertake activities to encourage public responsibility in the production, promotion, sale, and lease of consumer goods and services.

(h)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Advise the Governor and the Legislature on all matters affecting the interests of consumers.
</html:p>
<html:p>
(i)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Exercise and perform other functions, powers, and duties
that are deemed appropriate to protect and promote the interests of consumers as directed by the Governor or the Legislature.
</html:p>

(j)
<html:span class="EnSpace"/>
Maintain contact and liaison with consumer groups in California and nationally.
