                        <html:p>Existing law establishes the Instructional Quality Commission and requires the commission to, among other things, recommend curriculum frameworks to the State Board of Education.</html:p>
                        <html:p>This bill would require the commission, during the next revision of the publication “Health Framework for California Public Schools,” to consider including, and recommending for adoption by the state board, specific content related to the prevention of, and recognizing and responding to the signs and symptoms of, heat illness, as
                         described, and, for those purposes, to consider relevant guidance issued by the State Department of Public Health and policies adopted by the California Interscholastic Federation, as specified.</html:p>

                                                                (a)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                (1)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                During the next revision of the publication “Health Framework for California Public Schools” (health framework), the Instructional Quality Commission shall consider including, and recommending for adoption by the state board, specific content related to the prevention of, and recognizing and responding to the signs and symptoms
                                                of, heat illness.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (2)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                For purposes of paragraph (1), the commission shall consider relevant heat illness prevention measures, heat illness signs and symptoms, and heat illness responses, as addressed by guidance issued by the State Department of Public Health and policies adopted by the California Interscholastic Federation.
                                                        </html:p>

                                                                (b)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                For purposes of subdivision (a), all of the following apply:
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (1)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                “Prevention of heat illness” includes, but is not limited to, measures to stay cool, hydrated, connected to others, and informed of heat alerts.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (2)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                “Recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat illness” includes, but is not limited to, all of the following:
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (A)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                A red or flushed face.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (B)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Nausea.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (C)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Muscle cramps.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (D)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Headache.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (E)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Dizziness.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (F)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Fatigue or weakness.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (G)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Confusion.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (H)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Heavy sweating or the lack of sweating.

                                                                “Responding to signs and symptoms of heat illness” includes, but is not
                                                limited to, all of the following:
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (A)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Stopping physical activity.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (B)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Seeking shade or a cool area.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (C)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Drinking water or otherwise hydrating.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (D)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Cooling the body.
                                                        </html:p>
                                                        <html:p>
                                                                (E)
                                                                <html:span class="EnSpace"/>
                                                                Notifying a teacher, staff member, or other responsible adult.
